Hello everyone. I want to wish all the honors program students a blessed and happy semester. I am thrilled to be able to lead the honors seminar for fall 2018. We had a wonderful first class this morning with a great group of students. I am looking forward to working with them throughout the semester!

At the end of each semester, AB College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics holds a senior research symposium where students present their senior research projects. On April 24, 2018, Danielle Stuart, a graduating Honors student majoring in Biology, talked about her research “Risk Factors Associated with Ovarian Cancer.” Here is Danielle with the poster showing the methods and the results of her research. Congratulations, Danielle! Great job!
Lora Owston, ABU Honors student, reported on the Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day in Beckley for WV Public Radio’s program West Virginia Morning. Great job, Lora!
Hello, my name is Taylor Wagner. I am a freshman Criminal Justice and Psychology major with a minor in Ministry. I am involved with BCM, SPA, the Mission Team, and the Honors program here on campus. Over Spring break this year, I had the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and travel to Nicaragua for a mission trip. It was my first time out of the country and my first time on an airplane. We installed and supervised water filters, we held a health clinic with anemia testing, and we got to hold a Vacation Bible School with the children. While VBS was going on, we held a nutrition workshop with the parents. It was a truly life changing experience and I am looking forward to going again!
Hello, my name is Jasmine Kyle, and I am a second-year undergraduate honors student at Alderson-Broaddus University!
I am dual majoring in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management, two very important fields in the upcoming years as environmental issues become more and more prominent. Hopefully, my future career will be involved with conservation, as I hope to preserve the animals and natural wonders that we have left to us. More specifically, I work with organisms in Order Chiroptera, better known as bats. While many people view bats as pests, or even terrifying animals, one of my life goals is to better illuminate their crucial role on earth and in our everyday lives.

Great news from an AB Honors alumna Rory Winwood (class of 2016): she just completed the Master’s Program at Duquesne University and received a degree in Communications with an emphasis in Corporate Communications. She is now starting a job at a locally owned boutique in Pittsburgh called So Me Artisan Wares and Jeweler’s Studio where she will be running their Website, Social Media, and Blog and coordinating all of their other communications.
Congratulations, Rory! We are so proud of you!
My name is Jayme Hykes and I am an honors student here at AB. I am a junior, nursing major and do track and field on the side. I am from a small town called New Philadelphia, Ohio. This semester I was able to participate in the honors seminar “Cyberpsychology”. The course goes into detail about the creation of cyberspace and how it has evolved and affects today’s world. In this course we got to learn about the positives and negatives that cyberspace has contributed and what this may mean for our future generations. The course was very informative about the addiction cyberspace has caused and gives an outlook on how we, the next generation, needs to beware how this addiction is affecting our lives and our future. For anyone interested in psychology or technology this class would be a great course to look into that is fun and applicable to today.
Hello, I am Dr. Irina V. Rodimtseva, Assistant Professor of English and Director of the ABU Honors Program. Our program brings together a group of bright, ambitious, determined, and hard-working students. We offer them challenging courses and projects, as well as activities that expand their horizons, teach them to appreciate art, and forge their ties to the community. We encourage them to participate in undergraduate research conferences and to apply for prestigious scholarships. We reward their accomplishments by inscribing their names on the Honors plaque that decorates the walls of Burbick Hall, ABU main administrative building, and by adding “Graduated in the Honors Program” line to their transcripts.
